The history of the fork is as interesting as it is unexpected. The oldest forks ever discovered date back to bronze age China, about 2400 BC. We’re not sure how they started their life in the West. Some scholars believe that the fork dates to Ancient Egypt and that they made their way from there to the rest of the eastern Mediterranean. The fork’s popularity increased in Roman times, as evidenced by their increased presence in the archaeological record. Forks of the first few centuries AD seem to be common from Greece to Persia, although at the time they probably weren’t meant for individual use, but rather as a specialty cooking implement. The fork didn’t ever really become popular in Western Europe until its introduction to the Holy Roman Empire by Byzantine princess Theophanu in the 10th century AD. Chroniclers of the time seem to view Theophanu’s use of personal cutlery as a form of foreign decadence. Why couldn’t she just eat with her hands like everyone else? Too bad for the chroniclers…the people of Western Europe knew a good idea when they say it, and the rest, as they say, is history.
