Nahh I'm glad they went with this route coz it's realistic not black & white. Shows that not everyone can be parents but at the same time he loves his son just not more than his dreams which is a fresh concept in anime.

It's very likely the first chapter of the manga was written before Gin's character was fully realized. Him just abandoning his son is more consistent with the personality he has when he is properly introduced

Honestly Mito should have known that Gon was gonna chase after his father even if he had to wait as an adult to leave, and Ging should have stayed with Gon or at least visit him frequently. That way Ging could teach Gon about Nen early on before he took the exam. Gon would have a better chance at survival and probably would have been able to stand a chance against someone like Hisoka.
