Yeah but then what you have there is a G5.
If you lift your finger off the 3rd fret of the B string as well, then you have yourself a true G major chord again.

What I've learnt from being a player of only 2 years.....we start off trying to play every note on every string and get frustrated. Then we learn that less is more.

Most guitar chords have the Root and the Fifth as the lowest two. Atleast when you do closed voicings. In this case. The root and the Third are the two lowest, this change in voicing can make it stand out when compared to other chords

Ive been freeting A chord on an electric guitar with two fingers instead of 3. I use my index for D string and then put my middle finger a bit on angle on the B and G strings so it frets both of them. I find it more effective. Easier for fingers to fit, easier to change into other chords, and overall just diggin it better.

It depends on the context. If you're not including either the low or high B in there, it's a G5 because G and D are the only notes. Which is great, if you're playing About a Girl by nirvana that's actually the correct way

it sounds better cuz it is an entirely different chord. there's no third when you do that, which is something that coupd subtract from the quality of chord progressions in certain songs

I started doing that many years ago, when I realized the two low pitches don't sound good when played together
