Many of us feel that we are not worthy of financial success or success in general. With that we don’t trust ourselves and to the extent that the market will work in our favor towards our profit goals, even while in a profitable trade. Cutting the trade early in fear of losing out on that feeling of being financially successful.
When in a negative trade we don’t want to be validated in the emotions of not being successful. So holding onto the trade or adding onto the position to average down in hopes of not feeling like a failure again.
As you say, a losing trade doesn’t mean we are a bad trader and a winning trade doesn’t always mean we did something good. But the underlying emotions can be what I first wrote in the first two paragraphs.
