Dr. Broome: So many people come in asking about a avascular necrosis or AVN of the hip. This is one of the more common diagnoses that leads to hip pain in people. There's a variety of causes for this, but avascular necrosis or osteonecrosis of the hip is when an area inside the ball has lost its blood supply for whatever reason, and a cyst will develop. Well, that's a very painful process because it's actual inflammation inside the bone. Over time, if that cyst is large enough, it will collapse and the bone will start to flatten and sink down. At that point, the pain usually gets exponentially worse and most all those people are in the office seeking treatment. There are many options for treating this condition regardless of the cause. Sometimes we can do more conservative things like injections. Sometimes there are minor procedures where we can decompress the cyst on the inside of the bone and provide pain relief. As a worst-case scenario, if it's too far advanced, some of these people need to go on and have hip replacement for permanent treatment.
