It’s just an ordinary floor tile. Flooring tech has come a long way and now it’s probably as flat as 1950’s laboratory grade stuff. Mine was on sale for about $6 for this one piece, at lowe’s.

Any shiny flat ceramic will do.

It rests against any of my levels with no wobble and so i went further! Made a laser setup and the little bumps you see are just specs of
dust.

Machinist/woodworker here, who has several granite surface plates - including a 40x48x8” pink granite… be careful with heat on ceramic/porcelain tile, they can shatter without warning. Look at your local import woodworking or metal working retail store (around here it’s busy bee tools) they sell 18x12x4” granite plates for $60 (CAD) and they’re indestructible and very useful.

Better idea, look for a counter top installer and ask to get the piece of stone they cut out for the sink….

Coming from a tile guy, that tile has a slight cup in the middle of that porcelain tile but not as much as some12/24sI’ve seen.
Natural stone is the best thing for something like this application that can be used because there is no heating process

I install large format porcelain tile all the time in my bathroom remodels and I can assure you they are not perfectly flat. So don't use that as an example!

Also, silicone these to each of your plastic or metal side tables that come attached to your outdoor grill.
Heat proof and easier to clean.

I got my kitchen counters done and asked to keep the scrap. I turned a piece into one of my crafting tables and its just amazing for like painting or candle-making because its soo easy to scrape off! I use a scraper to clean my kitchen counters first so I dont have to scrub when I put the cleaner on.

Yup. Got a hardened glass door from IKEA's bargain corner for specifically that reason. That's now my tabletop. And yes it's even hammer drop proof.... so far. 10 years in.

Also works half decent for lapping if you use some spray adhesive and stick a sheet of sand paper to it

I have a thick piece of glass I use to check aluminum frame pieces for warps. Its my favorite recommendations!

Sure this tile is fireproof. But also have some limits. I am learning welding and sometimes very hot metal drops on our tile floor. Consequently, drops crack the tile with almost flat hollow, but anyway.

Don't forget to seal it every once in awhile. Great idea!

I keep an old glass table top that never saw use. It's slightly smaller than that. I mostly use it to sharpen stuff.

Works great! Just make sure to coat the back with rubber or something similar for when it inevitably cracks!

I've got a 1/2" thick square of acrylic that I use for my flatness needs. I may get granite in the future when I start doing more woodworking, but for my current crafts acrylic is fantastic.

Previous owners of our house left a 3’x3’ corner piece of extra quartz they had left over from the new countertop install. Instead of chucking it, I incorporated it into my work bench. Comes in so handy, just like this video outlined.
