Viking Berserker stops a whole army to buy time for his brothers
At the Battle of Stamford Bridge, a single Viking held off an entire army to buy time for his brothers.
The Norsemen had sailed to England in 1066 to lay claim to the throne. After destroying a large English army near York, they weighed themselves safe and waited outside the city without armor and with only a portion of their fighters. At that moment, 15,000 enemies appeared completely unexpectedly.
Despite this overwhelming force, the Vikings refused to lay down their weapons and retreated across a bridge, leaving a small group of axe warriors behind to defend the bottleneck. At their head fought a huge warrior, swinging his Dane axe in such a frenzy of blood that none of the English dared to pass. Those who came near him were cut down. Only after 40 English soldiers had fallen were they able to defeat the berserker by swimming under the bridge and piercing him with spears.
Even though the Vikings were eventually defeated, this gave them enough time to form a shield wall and fight to the last breath.
