I have heard it said that Ivar didn't get his nickname until after his death at the hands of a rival who, impressed by the sharpness of a new sword quipped by God the fellow has no bones, hence Ivar the boneless.

Ivar the Accursed not boneless
He is named as Ivar Exosus in Latin by Asser which means Ivar the Accursed or Cruel.
Normans later mistranslated it into Ivar the Boneless. It also didn't help that Ivar did have a great grandfather Harald Wartooth who had become so old that he had to be brought into battle on shields propped up by servants.
Other translation is that Ivar was probably called Beinlaus which translates to swift
