It's wild how different do fu fa (tofu flower) is from the north vs the south. Cantonese do fu fa is sweet with ginger, osmanthus, and brown sugar syrup. I've only ever had savory do fu fa as an adult when I saw it on a delivery app. As a salty/savory person I'm obsessed.

On the other hand, Cantonese jeung (boat festival lotus wrapped rice dumpling) is filled with fatty pork, savory mung bean, salted egg, and lapcheung which I love as opposed to northern Chinese sweet lotus jeung

I'm loving these Shorts. They make me want to go out and find similar food in our chinatown. 😅

I am having trouble to imagine the taste of a sweet deep fried donut mixed with savoury and spicy tofu sauce. Interesting combo.

Hey Amy, if you're ever in Henan, I strongly recommend you try the 胡辣汤 with 油条, the strong peppery taste goes really well with 油条.

tofu brain is the weirdest name... maybe because my background is more southern we usually say 豆花 rather than 豆脑

I think my brain just died because while you tiao + tofu hua is also a common breakfast here, here you tiao is neutral-savoury and tofu hua is sweet...

Youtiao and Douhua/Soymilk is pretty much classic breakfast across most of China. As for being savoury or sweet, that varies regionally.

if you prefer a heavier saltier taste, you can add the sauces and condiments. But if you prefer a light taste, just eating the plain tofu with the youtiao is nice enough
