In the 1930s, the Nazis developed the basic technology that launched both the Russian and American space programmes. After the Second World War, the Cold War began and the two superpowers, the US and the USSR, competed to see who could develop the most dangerous and sophisticated weapons. In this context, in the summer of 1955, both announced that they would launch a satellite into space. This was the beginning of a more beautiful race - the space race.
The Russians are in the lead. They have the first artificial satellite on Earth, Sputnik 1 /1957/; the first animal in space, Laika the dog /1957/; the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin /1961/; and when it looks like they've won the space race, President Jeff Kennedy makes a public announcement.
It is a curious fact that in 1963, shortly before his death, in a speech to the UN, Kennedy proposed to the Russians a joint mission to the moon. The Soviet leader at the time, Khrushchev, flatly refused, later changing his mind, but by the time they had reached an agreement, one had been assassinated and the other removed from office.
