This is what happens if you play as a collaborative effort. They have sesion 0s. They give Matt back stories that he can incorporate into his plot. Not to mention that they work with each other in the scenes. Most games I'm in are DM vs player, and the players are so focused on being the main character that they don't work together outside of combat.Also, Critical Role are all professional actors, so they make it seem effortless.

As an avid dnd player.. its not. I think at best they talk to Matt beforehand and go: "Hey we have this idea and we kinda wanna play it like this" which is pretty normal in any DND setting. Sometimes your player wants a special moment or something. Thats cool. And it shows they are invested.

There is a degree of scripting, but thats something that happens for pretty much every game of D&D. I.e. weâre going to a town where another PCâs parents live. My PC thinks they might have some information on something heâs been trying to resolve. I told my DM and that player I intend to ask them some questions if we end up going to those parents. I told the DM the general types of questions so she could prepare some stuff ahead of time. The other player provided some background info for the DM to help roleplay their characterâs parents. Thatâs technically scripted, but makes the game way more interesting and cohesive.

Why is it so hard for people to understand itâs not scripted using prompt cards etc? The closest thing to âscriptedâ is if they do what most players do and talk to their DM about what they want for their character. Even then itâs no guarantee.
My players and I have been playing together for two years now and with how fluid their RP is youâd think it was âscriptedâ. They simply know their characters, their partners, and the world space. Essentially they are dedicated to telling that characters story in that setting.

As an actor, I've always laughed at the idea that the show is scripted. Ain't no actor gonna memorize a 4 hour script weekly, that's when we unionize and strike đ
