Atheist here, I think a lot of people do break away from God because they feel their prayers aren't answered, sure.
But for me, and a lot of other people, it's simply that we're not convinced of God in the first place.
Why should I believe in something that nobody has ever seen or measured, when 4 year old me thought that it sounded like a fairy tale, they weren't wrong
It's fine to believe in God, but you have to admit that if you aren't indoctrinated at birth, it's pretty easy NOT to believe in God

I don’t think this metaphor really works at all. In order for any kind of mutual relationship to develop I need to be able to actually speak to them, learn about what’s going on in their life, they need to show me they care about me and what is going on in mine through more than just words. In a relationship if everybody tells you a person cares about you and wants to help you, but you never hear from them, or at least very rarely (and I’m talking about literal speaking. Actual words, not symbols or vague things to interpret.) you would think they don’t care at all. Now, I’m not saying I don’t believe in god, not am I saying that Jesus doesn’t care about you or communicate with you in some form or another. I’m saying that relating a relationship with a powerful deity to a mutual relationship with a friend is an inherently flawed analogy. Jesus is not your mutual. Jesus is not your friend. Even if Jesus cares, you can never be friends with something or someone you worship, because a friend is defined by mutual trust and communication, while a relationship with any deity is defined by faith and inferiority (even if that deity treats you as their equal). In other words, you can’t be Jesus’s friend because you’re not his equal and by definition you cannot be.

It is sad that some of us come to the Almighty God when we are in trouble and is struggling. Sometimes, Jesus just wants to do all the talking and we need to chill and listen.
