Quite like the World Bank has its Ease of Doing Business (EDB) rankings for countries, similarly there are rankings of states and UTs carried out by DPIIT and Ministry of Commerce and Industry…

The parameters include transparency of information, single window system, inspection enablers, utility and tax payments, labour regulation enablers, among others.

The last ranking was released in 2020 with parameters recorded for 2019, and the states are…

1/ Andhra Pradesh
2/ Uttar Pradesh
3/ Telangana
4/ Madhya Pradesh
5/ Jharkhand
6/ Chhattisgarh
7/ Himachal Pradesh
8/ Rajasthan
9/ West Bengal
10/ Gujarat
11/ Uttarakhand
12/ Delhi
13/ Maharashtra
14/ Tamil Nadu
15/ Lakshadweep
16/ Haryana
17/ Karnataka
18/ Daman Diu
19/ Punjab
20/ Assam
21/ Jammu & Kashmir
22/ Andaman & Nicobar
23/ Dadra & Nagarhaveli
24/ Goa
25/ Mizoram
26/ Bihar
27/ Puducherry
28/ Kerala
29/ Odisha, Chandigarh, Tripura, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal, Manipur

Surprisingly, Gujarat fell from #1 to #10 between 2015 to 2020

Maharashtra fell from #8 to #13 during this period

Odisha fell from #7 to #29

And Karnataka from #9 to #17

The rankings are based on the completion of action points based on the Business Reforms Action Plan under the Make in India initiative.

Quite honestly, the parameters of this ranking of states don’t necessarily reflect the level of business-conducive nature of the states, but the willingness of states to reform and attract investments.

It shows that the legacy states of Maharashtra, Delhi and Gujarat are capitalising on their existing infrastructure, while the others scramble and compete for the next growth spurt.

But thing is that these states were in top in ease of doing business thats why they attracted many companies in their states and now that they have created an ecosystem there , companies are bound to come these high gdp states rather than going to other states

Jharkhand???? That's just BS. I live here. I know how ridiculous it is to do business here. The real estate prices in top 3 cities will put Mumbaikars to shame. 😂
