George W. Bush had a 90% approval rating. I'm not even joking.

I can only imagine W Bush got that high because of reactions to 9/11

I've been a voter for a couple decades now and I have never been polled regarding my approval of any president

Imagine having a president with a consistent 70% approval rating, oh my gosh

it’s crazy that Bush went from 90% approval to almost 24%

Bush Jr also had a huge range of approval during his time in office. He posted a 90% approval shortly after 9/11, and also a 24% approval late in 2008 coming off the beginning of the financial crisis.

I think low Presidential approvals are going to continue for the foreseeable future given social media.

What people have to understand is polling nowadays has less to do with a president's performance and more about how much they don't like them.

Can’t believe we almost had a president named Alf

You can't get 90% of people to agree on anything nowadays

Someone once asked me “Where did Gallup Polls come from?” I had no clue, now I know. You learn something new everyday, no matter how trivial

It's important to note that JFK had an amazing approval rate because even his lowest was a 56% approval rate

Biden’s average is sitting at 43 and Gallup’s most recent poll (November 2023) had him at 37. It hasn’t gotten above 44 since September 2021, and four of the last eight months have had approval ratings in the high 30s. This last calendar year’s average was 39.9 (40). It’s not unlikely that he will finish lower than Trump, which is saying a lot since he walked in, having done nothing at that point, to a very welcoming 57% approval rating. For comparison, Trump walked in to a 45% approval rating. Losing 4% approval over the presidential term is a lot different from losing 14%.

But it’s important to keep things in perspective. Both Trump and Obama shared a 43% approval rating in their 12th quarter (which Biden is currently in, sitting at 37). H.W. Bush was at 56, W. Bush was at 52, and both Clinton and Reagan were at 53. The point being, Gallup polls don’t mean what you might presume them to, nor reflect what you generally sense among your fellow citizens.

As others have mentioned, the disapproval rating is perhaps even more important. Generally the sum of approval and disapproval only comes to 95%, so a 42% approval rating does NOT mean that 58% disapprove. Having said that, Biden’s last eight month consecutive average is 57% disapproval, and in that sum are four separate 59% disapproval ratings.

Predicting that Roosevelt would win in1936 was as perilous as predicting that it would rain in Seattle in 1936.

It’s worth noting that Trump’s approval rating was probably around 4-5% higher than that, as polls tend to significantly underestimate Trump’s support.

Fun fact: in Finnish (and possibly Swedish and also French), opinions polls are commonly just called "gallups", and it's not just some weird slang either. Whenever the biggest newspaper commissions a poll, they call it the equivalent of the "NYT gallup."

George W Bush really saw both ends of the spectrum, going from 90% to 25%
