Bidenâs average is sitting at 43 and Gallupâs most recent poll (November 2023) had him at 37. It hasnât gotten above 44 since September 2021, and four of the last eight months have had approval ratings in the high 30s. This last calendar yearâs average was 39.9 (40). Itâs not unlikely that he will finish lower than Trump, which is saying a lot since he walked in, having done nothing at that point, to a very welcoming 57% approval rating. For comparison, Trump walked in to a 45% approval rating. Losing 4% approval over the presidential term is a lot different from losing 14%.
But itâs important to keep things in perspective. Both Trump and Obama shared a 43% approval rating in their 12th quarter (which Biden is currently in, sitting at 37). H.W. Bush was at 56, W. Bush was at 52, and both Clinton and Reagan were at 53. The point being, Gallup polls donât mean what you might presume them to, nor reflect what you generally sense among your fellow citizens.
As others have mentioned, the disapproval rating is perhaps even more important. Generally the sum of approval and disapproval only comes to 95%, so a 42% approval rating does NOT mean that 58% disapprove. Having said that, Bidenâs last eight month consecutive average is 57% disapproval, and in that sum are four separate 59% disapproval ratings.

George W. Bush had a 90% approval rating. I'm not even joking.
