Angier is a stage magician who becomes obsessed with Borden’s trick, The Transported Man. He learns that Tesla has built a machine that can transport objects, and he travels to Colorado to find him. Tesla agrees to build a similar machine for Angier, but warns him that it has a cost. The machine actually creates a duplicate of whatever is placed inside it, while leaving the original intact. Angier decides to use the machine for his own version of The Transported Man, but he has to kill his duplicates every time to avoid being exposed. He stores the bodies in a warehouse, where Borden discovers them and is framed for Angier’s murder. Angier’s clones are identical to him in every way, except for the clothes they wear. They share his memories, personality, and skills. They are unaware that they are clones until they see the original Angier on the stage. They are killed either by drowning in a water tank or by being shot by the original Angier. The last clone of Angier is killed by the surviving twin of Borden, who reveals his secret to him. Angier’s clones are the result of his ambition, envy, and pride, which ultimately lead to his downfall.
