I took a mandatory class on intersectionality for college, and a portion of it addressed food insecurity.
The documentary we were watching followed a single mother trying to improve the lives of her kids only to find that she made 2 dollars over the limit for food stamps.
She had tried to put in more time at work and find a higher paying job, but she gets punished by good ol Uncle Sam here.
The irony is that the rest of the class insisted that more of this government is needed. So close, yet so far.

The most food I've ever had in my home was while on food stamps. In hindsight it was drastically more money than we needed and we watched most abuse it.

I have cerebral palsy but was placed on welfare by social non-workers and a judge using unilateral force. This increases bureaucratic number and power. It destroyed my life. I was raped bureaucratically and did not consent to my welfare order by mail.UNLESS IN SEVERE,UNTREATED CHRONIC PAIN, NEVER GO ON WELFARE. WORK IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR ONLY FOLKS, NOT A HORRIFIC GOVERNMENT FACTORY.

I'm not surprised to hear this. We ran into a rough patch about 20 years ago. We got food stamps for a while until I managed to land two jobs to keep things together. They got really pissy about it when we tried to quit. I ended up being forced to pay back a little more than they gave us even for the time when we legitimately needed the help. I'm going to be confined to aa wheel chair before I ever go that route again.
