And not just that, to get here, you have to cross the U.S.-Canada border not once, but twice. Plus, if the residents of this town need to stock up on groceries, the closest Costco isn’t even in the U.S.—it’s in Richmond, Canada!
So how did this bizarre border situation come to be in the first place?
Well, this weird situation stems from the Treaty of Oregon, when the US and British Canada agreed to draw the border along the 49th parallel. But no one seemed to consider this little bit of land at the tip of what’s now British Columbia that dipped below that line.
And, as a result, Point Roberts became part of the U.S., even though it is surrounded on most sides by Canadian Territory.
Moreover, Point Roberts lacks basic services like a high school or even a dentist, meaning the residents must cross two international borders just to get their teeth fixed.

It is insaneee, we Canadians had to keep you on your toes! The 49th parallel definitely gave us some interesting history, especially with places like Point Roberts. I mean, how funny is it that a little slice of the U.S. ended up stranded on the Canadian side? Guess we both got a few surprises with those early borders!

I'm surprised they even knew where the 49th parallel was at that time. For all we know, they could've been way off. If Canada just joined us like we so politely asked in 1812 like a good little america, then we wouldn't have this problem.
