To understand or recreate the past, a historian is affected by the limited historical remains, reports of previous historians that are variably reliable, and the available techniques and technologies.
It is also the historian's personal experience and previous work, among many other things, that skews their outlook. This is all considering that there is no additional censorship or other restriction in place.
As such, all historical figures, events and processes can be seen in a different light from person to person.
This means we can only glimpse the muffled image of what the past was really like.
