Impurities create reflections that the receiver picks up. This would be better than measuring something directly as whatever sensor you use will eventually get clogged. I imagine this would eventually trend down as things stick to the lenses and the reflected intensity goes down. Occasionally you may have to clean those lenses for impurities that stick to them either through time or static electricity.
