You would be surprised to know that one of the largest explosions of World War II wasn’t caused by combat. The Royal Air Force Fauld explosion on November 27, 1944, in Staffordshire, England, was one of the biggest non-nuclear blasts in history. An underground munitions depot storing around 4,000 tons of explosives suddenly detonated in a massive explosion. The blast created a crater 100 feet deep and over half a mile wide, destroying nearby buildings, farms, and even a reservoir, causing severe flooding. At least 70 people were killed, though the exact number remains uncertain due to the devastation. While the exact cause of the explosion is debated, it is believed that improper handling of explosives or a spark triggered the disaster. The RAF Fauld explosion was the largest in the UK during World War II and remains one of the most significant non-nuclear blasts in history.
