The Colette Climbing Rose for the win! The smell is truly divine and I am piping it through your phone and computer as we speak…lol! Other than the thorns, this rose is everything that dreams are made of! This plant is over 5 years old now and was introduced to me by a wonderful North Texas gardening friend! If you live in North Texas, you can’t just throw this beauty into the ground! It is a must to amend our clay soils with rich, organic amendments such as compost, worm castings, etc. Good drainage is essential, so be sure to mix in pea gravel or expanded shale. You don’t want your roots sitting in wet clay or you will most definitely get root rot, a pretty common occurrence in North Texas soils! Fertilize with a slow release in the spring and then apply a bloom booster through the blooming season. I don’t trim that often, but you do want to cut back dead growth or growth that is shooting outwards instead of upwards!
