I cannot resist the urge to self-correct it as "octopussies" whenever "octopuses" is said..

Linguist here. English is not my area of expertise but as a rule of thumb if a term is used by at least a group of people it's considered a accepted variant. But language isn't about what's wrong or right its more about finding a common ground for people to communicate and if people understand it's totally fine.

IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY Octopus is from a Greek word. Therefore, Octopi (Latin plural) is incorrect. Octopuses is wrong for reasons I can't remember. But because it's Greek, it's Octopodes.

would it be octopuses if it was multiple species of octopus being referred to?

I’ve heard the term ”octopedeas” somewhere and it has such an interesting ring to it I just use that in the rare instance I need to mention multiple ”octopedeas”

Like how the plural name for deer and moose is just deer and moose.

Then tha anglerfish clapped that octopussy, and it inked all over itself. You are welcome for that mental image.

I tend to say octopodes whenever I am talking more than one, but everyone I know calls me a loser for that

Can we all just agree that arguing about what is basically the semantics of what ever sounds more pleasing is utterly silly and it genuinely doesn't matter which is used because anyone with 2 working brain cells should be able to figure it out from context?

Just think of it in the same context of deer, elk, and moose

Shower thought: is the evolution of language just everyone gaslighting each other on what words are right until they become right?

Yeah... I Googled it and couldn't find a source on the first page that even included "octopus" as plural in the debate. Pretty much everyone defaults to the simple linguistic rule of whichever form is used more commonly is the more "correct" form. This means that "octopuses" is the preferred plural
