Tweeting a Nazi swastika should NOT land you in jail.

American playwright CJ Hopkins was found guilty of “distributing unconstitutional symbols” in Germany and faces 60 days in jail. Why? Because he tweeted his book cover criticizing Nazism and the German government’s Covid policies that featured a swastika.
His cover might be controversial, but it’s hardly Nazi propaganda.

The German government is using rules meant to protect its people from totalitarian control, to restrict criticism of the government. This completely violates CJ’s civil liberties and only underscores his point that the German government is drifting back toward totalitarianism.

This proves what FIRE has been saying for years: making laws to censor disfavored ideas only empowers the government to shut down criticism.

His worst crime was criticizing the government

Prosecution being able to appeal makes no sense

It's the government telling the government that they were wrong, and this person is guilty

One of the best comments about this case comes from Jamie Kirchick in an article he wrote about CJ’s case in The Atlantic: “A government that prosecutes a writer for calling its policies fascistic unwittingly validates the criticism.”

I guess his criticism hit a little too close to home.

I don’t agree with Germany’s laws but downplaying the holocaust is definitely against them. It’s like saying the EPA is fascist when it affects everyone equally and exists to protect the public. He wasn’t critiquing nazis he was using them to make money. This is a cowardly interpretation.

dude what? what’s your argument here? is it that covid safety measures are equivalent to Nazi actions??? rethink the writing of this short if you don’t support anti-maskers or Nazis because I don’t even have a horse in this race.. I don’t know what you’re talking about, but now I know I just don’t want to listen to you talk so I’m hitting “Don’t Reccomend Channel”. Hope you can appreciate the honest feedback.

You provide zero context in regards to the legal history of nazi symbolism post ww2 in Germany and just view it from an American conservative reactionary perspective
