US Pilots Land on Germany's Secret AUTOBAHN AIR BASE! Why Parts of the German Highway can be used as Road Runways.

During the Cold War, fighter pilots regularly practiced landing on the German Autobahn.

To create more space for NATO aircraft in the event of an attack by the Soviets, sections of the public highway could be converted into auxiliary military air bases. For this purpose, particularly flat and straight sections of the highway were chosen, with no bridges or other obstacles nearby. The guard rails in the middle could be removed and the hard shoulder was additionally widened. In addition, the roadway was given a thicker-than-normal surface to meet the requirements of a runway. This allowed entire transport aircraft to land on the highway as well as fighter jets and attack aircrafts such as the famous A-10. Rest areas were also enlarged and used as parking slots for the airplanes, while mobile towers and radar systems controlled the air traffic.

In the event of an emergency, a makeshift airfield could thus be put into operation within a few hours. Unfortunately, most of the 30 or so highway sections have since been deconstructed. However, the attentive observer can still find clues to this exciting double life of the Autobahn.

Imagine you are in the autobahn doing 300kph thinking you are the fastest guy around. Then a eurofighter typhoon casually passes you

Imagine crusing on the Autobahn in the 80s in a Mercedes SL and just seeing an jet fly real low. How awesome would that be

Same thing here in Taiwan too, every median in these sections is removable, it’s pretty cool to came across when driving

Edit: Just fyi, but the thicker surface is absolutely noticeable when you drive over them, it’s flatter and much more comfortable to drive than your usual highway, not a single bump or pothole

The Swedish JAS Gripen doesn't need all those preparations, it's just to land and take off on a straight asphalt road.

Same here in sweden, there’s even on a lot of highway, kind of a « for emergency laneĀ Ā» that goes a bit in the forest, more to the side of the road, so that from an ennemy plane perspective, you just think that it’s in the forest and you can’t really see it, add in a bit of camouflage like some fake trees that expands and it’s pretty much invisible

I just imagine some Thunderbirds-like contraption which automagically removes the railings in the middle to transform it into a runway

Lots of them in Sweden too. Parking for airplanes on the side and bunkers. Great places if you want to risk some speeding. Super straight, flat and very long! šŸ˜‚

The same for Warsaw Pact's Polish airmen. We still keep dozens of such road sections in good shape

Actually the US Interstate system was originally modeled after the Autobahn, including the idea of being able to land on it. Originally it had to have so much straight away in any given length.

I remember reading about these in some magazine my JROTC library. Had F-16's parked in the woods.

S. Korea has been doing this for years, the major highway between Puson City and Seoul is used for that and it includes air traffic control towers.

I remember visiting Sweden, and my friend who's stayed there longer told me he always found it cool that you can tell that youve arrived at an emergency airfield when the road suddenly stretches into 5 lanes and the asphalt gets much thicker, that's also when you look at the sides of the road and notice shacks and small hangars hidden in the brush.
