Asia’s first woman loco pilot, Surekha Yadav, is set to retire on September 30 after an illustrious career of 36 years, the Central Railway (CR) announced on Thursday, September 18.

Yadav was warmly honored by her fellow drivers, railway staff, and family members when she reached Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) operating the Hazrat Nizamuddin–CSMT Rajdhani Express (Train No. 22222).

“Smt. Surekha Yadav, Asia’s first woman train driver, will retire on 30th September after 36 years of distinguished service,” CR wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Calling her a pioneer, CR noted how she shattered stereotypes, inspired generations of women, and proved that no dream is impossible. Her story, it added, will always stand as a symbol of empowerment in Indian Railways.

Born in Satara, Maharashtra, Yadav earned a diploma in electrical engineering before unexpectedly joining the railways as a trainee assistant driver. Over the years, she steadily climbed the ranks in a field dominated by men.
