So I just went and watched the full video, and I've had a realization...
So, on a recent video, I noticed that when the creator says "like" or "subscribe", the respective buttons would flash. I assumed that this was something that could be set when uploading the video. Something like "flash the thumbs up button at 0:11".
Now, this still may be the case. it could be that this channel went back and added the flash for their older videos, like this 6 year old video. But I think it's more likely that youtube uses the same feature that auto-generates the captions to pick up on terms like "like", "thumbs up", and "subscribe", to the flash the respective button.
More testing is needed to be sure, though.
