Pharm tech here......use afrin for no longer than 3 days at a time. Give at minimum 5 days rest period. Using for more than 3 days will start some new ish for you to worry about.

for the vicks one, my mom used to just get a bowl with hot water and add it in, then put a towel over my head and let me inhale the steam

Careful with the nasal spray. That type will definitely work for a bit, but extended use over 3 days will cause a buildup of immunity to the point where you will be dependent on it every couple hours. Use it only as an absolute last resort, as your congestion will be far worse when it wears off.

AS for the shower and vicks - can save a lot of water(and money) by just boiling a bowl of water and putting some vicks into the water, lean over the bowl w/a towel covering your head and breathe in and out under the towel over the bowl for several minutes.

Make sure you only use the afrin spray sparingly. Your body will become use to it, and will require you to use it constantly to keep from getting congested

Please be careful putting Vicks on your shower floor. It’s mostly Vaseline (petroleum jelly) which will make the shower floor slippery as hell. Since it’s oily, water wouldn’t be able to rinse it away easily either, so make sure to either clean your shower afterwards or be aware that it may be slick for the next few showers or until you clean it.

Be careful with Afrin. Read the package label. If you use it more than a few days then your congestion will get worse

I'm an elementary teacher and mom so I'm basically an expert at being sick and needing to be not sick because little kids can't take care of themselves. Afrin is only when absolutely necessary, and 3 days (6 doses) MAX, then wait at least 5 days before resuming. This was already mentioned, but it's just that important. Try pseudoephedrine. You have to get it from the pharmacist, but it's OTC. Nasal rinse like a mofo. Vicks only makes your nasal passages FEEL different; it doesn't actually help, but the steam does. The hot feet and cold face doesn't actually do anything. Save your energy for jumping to help loosen things up. Breathe right strips can help when congestion isn't too bad yet.

Hope everyone unwell feels better soon!!!

For the sinus congestion, it’ll work if it’s NOT a sinus infection that you’ll need antibiotics for. If you need antibiotics, the massage won’t do much because you’re not breaking up any mucus. I’ve been there… it sucks

As someone in medical school, please please please stay away from Afrin unless a doctor tells you to use it. It can be very addictive, and your body will get very used to it to the point that your sinuses will be congested 24/7 unless you use a shit ton of Afrin. There are people who go through multiple bottles a week because they use it so much. Plus the detox is horrible.

Otherwise, the first two points are fine. You're better off with a Mucinex every 8 hours, and Tylenol if there's pain. You can also go to an urgent care location and get a steroid/antibiotic shot which will clear you up pretty quickly.

Just make sure you don't use Oxymetazoline or Xylometazoline nasal sprays for more than 5 days! ❤️

Vaporub also makes a shower steamer that helps to clear out the sinuses like that. Not sure which would be cheaper; the steamer or using the rub and putting it on the floor. Be careful not to slip on it though.
