Having the right part works best.

Very clever! But have to admit I think I would have gotten a different O-ring. Regardless of what the bag label says, that O-ring does not seem like it will seal properly.

I work in power generation. We don’t always have every orings for every piece of equipment in the plants.
We DO have oring master kits. They have various sizes of the rubber, or nitrile or whatever material needed.
It’s just lengths of the material. You cut it to the desired length, a tool comes with it to ensure a straight, square cut, then…super glue the ends together.
The same works in these situations. A square cut is important to not having a leak.
Use a razor blade and cut the oring , size it, then super glue the ends together.
It’s not a “ hack” or a “ cheat” it’s an accepted form of maintenance taught and used in the industry.
High pressure hydraulics to low pressure pumps, it works IF you take your time and make precise fits.

Freezer takes a bit longer but also can work well to shrink them. Do it for injectors pretty often

Manufacturers constantly pack the wrong parts in the right bags. We get LH mouldings in RH packaging all the time and bags missing components and the literal part.

I think the potential oversight here, as an educator, was not clearly distinguishing between what you should do in most situations as a tech and what you can do in a pinch (or on your own vehicle). I actually think it's a good tip for certain situations, but I can also understand why others in the comments object to it. If you were working at a shop or a dealer and this was a customer's car, would you have done the same thing or would you have made an attempt to source a better fitting o-ring? Genuinely asking, not a rhetorical question.

Get an assortment of o rings in different diameters - but the ones you buy by the foot. Correct loctite glue and 80% of needs are covered

O-rings are usually standard components and you can find their number by measuring the groove width and diameter and getting it from a seals supplier 😊 that looks like a 2 series oring from what I can tel

A box of assorted O-rings absolutely WILL NOT have every type of o-ring that you need. Sometimes you'll need some that are thicker, wider, etc. Faye had a great idea in my opinion. In a perfect world, she wouldn't have had to do this and I'm sure she'd be the first to admit it. But we all know with working on vehicles, sometimes you've gotta come up with tricks like this.

For various rubber seals you are trying to re-use (we've all done this😉) but are swollen due to exposure to gas or whatever you can put them in boiling water and they'll shrink up

I just cut my O rings to fit. It’s a beautiful thing.

Have to admit, a little nervous on that last push. Good job.👍🏻

Rubber will shrink in the freezer.
Rubbing alcohol will lube rubber for installs and dries up oil free.
Vaseline is great for "sticking" rubber seals in place.

cool solution.. i wonder if you place the part and bearing in freezer.. would that work to?

If it doesn't fit and is only slightly bigger you can put it in the fridge for a few minutes, or the freezer for 30 seconds to a minute to shrink it to fit the application, but if possible always use the right size 😉

This is is why you just buy a box of rings. Instead of relying on others to get it right. This seal is going to fail because of it being too large.

A big set of O-rings with lots of different sizes as well worth the 15 or $20 it cost. 😇
