Our brains and nervous systems respond to touch, especially rhythmic touch. And bilateral stimulation is one of the best ways that we can access deeper parts of our brains. This is one of the fundamentals of therapies like EMDR, but you can use this at home anytime!

If you have trouble calming down, especially before bed, try this modified technique. You can place your hands anywhere, but I find that the chest is especially effective. Gently tap side to side starting with a fast pace. Over the course of 1–2 minutes, slow down the rhythm. Pay attention to little releases, like sighing, swallowing, muscles relaxing, or yawning.
