When they put up speed cameras in my city, they all mysteriously got cut down in the span of a single night. That's over 90 cameras spread out across a MASSIVE city (one of the largest in the world), all cut down and removed. Clearly it was a coordinated operation.
The cameras were found piled up in netting in a tidepool on the beach, soaked through with salt water and useless. That was over $3 million in camera equipment.
But the contract was such that the camera destruction didn't cost the City anything specifically. They had signed on for a contract with the speed camera company for them to install and maintain the cameras, with the camera company getting a cut of speeding ticket fines.
So the cameras went back up again, and two weeks later the same thing happened.
The third time they installed cameras to watch the other cameras. The perpetrators waited two months -- until there was a Category 2 hurricane -- then removed both the speed cameras AND the monitoring cameras during the widespread power outages.
At that point the camera company cancelled the contract and paid the penalty fines. They were out over $20 million in equipment, to say nothing of labor costs, by that point. And our City has never again tried to use this technology.
