Like many said... turn the brackets the right side up and have the shelves sitting on top with screw just holding them in place. This is a win-win situation as the bracket arms take the weight of the shelves+decor, and the straps can also act as hangers to prevent the brackets from slipping out.

Switch the shelf brackets upside down for more leverage and greater stability. Good idea 👍

Engineer here, they dont need to put the l brackets the other way around because the shelves and objects on the shelves create a moment about the boytom of the l bracket, which progressively tensions the straps when loaded (especially the top one) outwards.

Its fine for the loads they are using, you can see this when they do a pull up.

The nylon straps will be fine as long as they dont get excessive moisture or UV, which they wont as they are indoors and covered.

I know they want to hide the L brackets, but having them upside down is a ticking time bomb. 😂

Just put 3M double sided adhesive on the back of the L-brackets and then the ratchet straps over it like you have. The L-brackets do not have enough surface friction to keep the shelf from pulling the brackets down. The combination of adhesive and pressure from the straps will actually be incredibly strong.

This is giving me insane anxiety. Why didn't you put the L brackets the other way around??? 😭

other than the brackets being upside down this is really cool!

I know you prioritised aesthetic, but if you turn the wedges, so the horizontal part lays on top of the ratchet strap, then they can't be pressured out of the hold by weight put on it. Instead they slightly lower the strap, putting it slightly off enter and thus tightening it even more

I would have added some kind of silicone or rubber sheet between the pillar and the brakets to increase friction and decrase rubbing

I came here to say the L-brackets should be installed with the wall support facing down… but several others commented this as well!
As long as you’re covering them with MDF anyway, I’d flip it and have a more secure shelf.

This is giving me feng shui anxiety!

Some led strip lights in between the cardboard, and the pillar would have made a great up lighting effect 👌 great idea with the ratchet straps tho!!

Just a reminder to check the straps because they will stretch out over time especially with the weight drag added and it being a new strap. So you will definitely want to maie ut where it can easily be accessed to cinch it up

Honestly if you put the paper in a different colour that matches your room it would look better and like an accent

Ok but the tension is not going to keep them from sliding out how did no one realize this

Love the creativity!
You could make the MDF-plate higher, all the way up, so it doesn't have an edge in the middle between the shelf and the roof, otherwise it was absolutely superb!

I have never seen someone put the brackets on the top of the shelf like this. I feel there is a good reason it's typically done the other way.

I think still using the ratchet straps but leaving them visible and maybe metal shelves or something industrial could also be a vibe

The straps with stretch with time. Hope the renter knows they will need to tighten a click before their stuff falls...
