Celts and Alexander the Great - How Did They Meet? #shorts

Following Alexander the Great’s conquest at the lower Danube, the Celtic tribes sent emissaries in 335 BC to negotiate a treaty of friendship and hospitality with the young Macedonian leader, who has so far been charging one successful battle after the next.

Strabo relays the account of Ptolemy, Alexander’s companion: The Celts who dwell on the Adriatic came to Alexander for the purpose of making a treaty of friendship and mutual hospitality, and that the king received them in a friendly way, and asked them, while drinking, what might be the chief object of their dread, supposing that they would say it was he; but that they replied, it was no man, only they felt some alarm lest the sky should fall on them, but that they valued the friendship of such a man as him above everything.
These examples sufficiently manifest the open sincerity of the barbarians…

Another delegation was received by Alexander in Babylon 323 BC. Coins with the image of Alexander and his father Philip were very popular among Celtic chiefdoms and the Celts based their own coins on their examples.

Just for some clarification, the term barbarian or “barbaroi” doesn’t have the same connotations as it does today. It essentially meant anyone who wasn’t considered greek. The Persians, Egyptians, and even Italians at the time who would’ve all been considered civilized to the Greeks, would still be called a barbarian. Perhaps a modern translation of the term could be better exemplified through what we would call a “foreigner” I.e someone foreign to your land vs it meaning what today people would mean when they say “barbarian”.

I'm an ancestor of the Celts and this is very interesting. I never knew the Celts had contact with Alexander the Great. 👍

Well, barbarians, in general, are usually brave and sincere, nothing weird about it, coz they haven't been corrupted by civilisation
