Opposite action is a technique from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) that encourages us to act in ways that are opposite to the urges driven by intense emotions.
Imagine feeling intense anxiety about presenting in a meeting. Your instinct might be to slouch, lean out, and try to minimize your participation to reduce discomfort. But, using opposite action, you would choose to face the anxiety head-on by preparing thoroughly, engaging fully, sitting up straight, and even volunteering to speak up. By doing the opposite of what the anxiety urges (leaning into the situation rather than avoiding it) you can start to break the association between the anxiety and the conditioned response. Over time, this approach can help reduce the power of that anxiety.
By engaging in behaviors that contradict what our immediate feelings suggest, we can gradually reshape emotional responses and reduce the impact of unhelpful patterns.
