Evangelicals used to be pro-choice. I've known this for a long time, but I never read until recently just how clear and outspoken they were. In 1968, one scholar wrote, "God does not regard the fetus as a soul, no matter how far gestation has progressed." One professor urged understanding despite differences in opinions saying, "We must reckon with the fact that there are those within the Christian community who can see no final offense in abortion when entered into responsibly by a woman in consultation with a physician."

So it's not like everyone agreed, but there was an openness. Even the Southern Baptist issued a resolution in 1971, and then reconfirmed in '74 and '76 after Roe v. Wade, supporting abortion when deemed necessary for "The emotional, mental, and physical health of the mother." After a symposium about birth control, a group of evangelical leaders and doctors put out this statement, "The Christian physician will advise induced abortion only to safeguard greater values sanctioned by scripture. And what are these Bible values?

These values should include individual health, family welfare and social responsibility. When principles conflict, the preservation of fetal life may have to be abandoned to maintain full and secure family life. Well, if that's the result of taking the Bible literally, get back to it.

This is what I say to people. There's nothing wrong with Christianity, Judaism, Islam or any religion. It's certain types of people who uses religion as a weapon.

I get the feeling that a good 70% of the motivation there was to take the opposite position of the Catholics.

And this is the EXACT reason I have trust issues. This is how easily propaganda can sway a weak culture. A conformist mindset is our greatest danger.

I havent been christian for a while (about 8-10 years roughly). But I do remember reading the whole Bible.

My biggest takeaway where I was at youngest 11 years old, was "wow, nobody at my church actually knows what the Bible says". And now, even though I am no longer Christian. I still hold to that belief. If you are religious, fantastic but don't police others with your religion. And if you want to adhere to what your religious text says. Actually read it first. Then discuss it with people who also read it. Then you can start talking about what is good, and what isnt in your religion

People will use the word and twist it to make their morals seem justified

They used to organize voters on the issue of maintaining racial segregation.
That became socially unacceptable, so they needed a new issue to get votes for their candidates.

It just goes to show that leadership is important. Your leader can lead you to new heights, or right off of a high cliff.

I don't follow man, I follow God. I don't care what these evangelicals interpreted out-of-context verses to mean, I have read the Bible for myself. God knows us before we are born. That's all I need to know to determine the value of the unborn child.

Tens and tens of thousands of denominations of Protestants means that you can probably find an example of everything under the sun being ok.

Thank god for separation of church and state. Cause just cause they say it’s okay that doesn’t mean it’s moral. They said slavery was okay and that didn’t make it moral either.

All new info to me, thank you! Factual ammunition to use during discussion with the opposition is like gold.

Luckily I don’t need validation from some church to know that endng a human life for the sake of convenience is a bad thing

Just because one group thinks it'd okay doesn't mean it's Biblical.

When you pick and choose scriptures for convenience and leave out very important parts of history of who or why those legislations were brought up

There’s a reason for this particular division in Christianity. When Martin Luther left the Catholic Church he edited the Bible. His version of the Bible excluded a few books that mentioned Purgatory because he did not agree with it. The Biblical reference for the Catholic belief on abortion were in those books.

I’m not entirely sure this is correct, this is simply what I think is the most plausible, I’m sorry if this causes any confusion. If I am wrong, feel free to correct me, just me nice about it. This is meant to be a discussion, not a source.

They used to consider it to be a Catholic problem only. The only reason that they switched over to being anti-abortion was because it stopped being popular or considered even okay in the slightest for them to continue arguing against racial integration in the schools like they had been doing forever, so they changed to a different cause that also of course disproportionately affects minorities.

The Southern Baptist Church and Evangelical churches have never not been racist.

It’s things like this that the average person hears and takes as complete and non-manipulated truths. The church has never supported infanticide which is more synonymous with modern-day abortion. Abortion however was a term used for all medically necessary termination of pregnancy. This is an extremely important point when quoting historical views of the church. So for someone like this who is quite obviously educated on the subject, it is dishonest at the least and purposefully a manipulative lie at its worst.
