The alternative would have been to build a smaller version as a test and operate it for years to study the conditions then plan and build accordingly. They did some sort of planning and testing but severely underestimated it. Real world testing for years would have been astronomically expensive and likely derailed the entire project. So they did what they could and are paying the price.

Sounds like a fantastically difficult, but exciting geotechnical project!!!

You would think they would raise it enough over the sea level.
But no.

So they’ll either need to build massive floodwalls around the artificial island or what, inject concrete into deep shafts or drive very long piles under the entire island to stabilize? With the tsunami threat I’m honestly surprised it isn’t surrounded by tall flood walls anyway

50cm a year would mean its sunk by 15m in 30 years. It has actually "only" sunk just over 8m since that time.

1cm a year is too much.
50cm a year is catastrophic.

When you suddenly hear the airport on the radio during your landing approach: „Mayday - we‘re sinking!“

For any people wondering why Japan doesn't just build an airport on land, go research. Their country is smaller than California but has a 1/3 of the U.S. population, or roughly 130 million people. Yes they have over 7800 islands, yet a lot of them are protected. Although its extremely expensive, its just more practical for their own land to build an airport of that size on water.

Build a water proof wall around it, install 100s of drainage sumps and pumps on the site.

It has been sinking beyond original design data about six months before it opened. There are I believe four upgrades to take place after the first review was made each depending on the prior before being started.

Sounds, or reminds me of millennium tower in San Francisco USA. It's over 50 floors & is both leaning & sinking a hell of a lot because of the piles weren't deep enough . Maybe the same there. It was built on silty clay.

For a country beset by seismic activity, building an airport on poor ground is a bit of lack of foresight from a country which excels in engineering. 🤔
