The Santa Rita Mine, of Chino Operations, is owned by Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold Inc. and is one of the oldest copper mines in North America. It produces copper and molybdenum and is an open-pit copper mine east of Silver City in beautiful southwest New Mexico. It is so large that it can be seen from space. It includes the legendary “Kneeling Nun” mountain of the Santa Rita Mountain range. The Kneeling Nun is composed entirely of a single volcanic unit. The ash-flow tuff or ignimbrite was formed about 34 m.y. ago.

A quarry of some sort was dug near my hometown on a road that was once a scenic country ride. For years, the dust flew and trucks came and went. Then, one day, they all just left. They left the crumbling, bent and rusted fences. They left the scarred land - a huge hole full of water marked as hazardous, but nobody knows why or how or to what extent it’s now contaminated. They left downed trees and dead ones still standing that were damaged by large equipment. They left old workmen’s office trailers to rot. It’s disgusting that we humans seem to be so great at destruction, instead of living with greater consideration and care.
