Helen and Les Brown were born on the same day, December 31, 1918. They eloped at 18 because their families were against their relationship and said it wouldn’t last. But they proved everyone wrong, spending 75 years together. At 94, Helen passed away peacefully. Les, never told she was gone, followed just one day later. A quiet love — lasting until their very last breath.

More Context & Credits:

Helen and Les Brown (both born on December 31, 1918) were a devoted couple known for their lifelong bond. They came from different social backgrounds: Les’s father was a successful businessman and landowner in Southern California, while Helen’s father worked on the railroad.

Both families opposed their relationship, believing a marriage between a wealthy young man and a working-class woman would never last. But at 18, Helen and Les eloped — and went on to prove everyone wrong, sharing 75 years of marriage.

Throughout their lives, they were known in their community for their closeness and daily companionship. Family members fondly recalled the quiet strength of their love, which remained unshaken even in old age.

In their final years, Helen battled stomach cancer, and Les suffered from Parkinson’s disease and eventually slipped into a coma. Helen passed away peacefully at home on July 16, 2013. Unaware that his wife had died, Les passed away less than 24 hours later, on July 17.

My husband and I always say we hope we go together. We know it’s not possible, but the idea of either living without the other hurts a lot. My hope is that maybe we can be close together, so we can follow eachother into the afterlife

I recently met a couple who were 92 and 95. They had been together since they were in JR. High (ages 11 & 13 respectively). They had 6 kids, over a dozen grandchildren, several great grandchildren and even 2 great great grandchildren. They were both healthy and active. Their secret? Marry your best friend and everything else will work out.
