We say this in Australia as well. I was so confused when I heard Americans say bathroom, since the toilet is usually (but not always) separate here.

Probably the whole of Europe says toilet instead of bathroom (here in Holland too), maybe with the exception of the UK, I'm not sure. I always found bathroom confusing and thought that it might be used when you're in a posh place ;-))

Naturally bathroom should include just facilities to take a bath. Having toilet in a bathroom is not desirable, but a compromise to save space and money.
Bathroom might include sauna, that I can understand. But toilet... No. 😉

The fact is that we Swedes think something similar when you Americans say you going to the bathroom when there is neither a bathtub nor a shower in the room in question, hihi ;)
