it's traditional in water colours to use washes instead of mixing white pigment or adding less pigment to a paint, which are the only ways to make it actually paler out of the tube. for skilled painters it's kind of a ripoff because you're getting less pigment for the same price, when you could limit the deposit of the pigment yourself. that is exactly the colour i expected it to be. i don't think you're likely to find a pale peachy beige watercolour except in sets that are more tailored toward beginners or for kids.

It's simple: Europeans come in a variety of skin tones depending on the season, time outside, clothing quality, etc. You want a color for skin? Then you want a base tone that can be lightened and mixed for winter and nobility, or richly warm anything outside.
Also, late 1800s is peak interactions before the modern era. Even the most remote Scandanavian knew of the Chinese and their trade, the Arabic and their turbins against the sand, and the dark Africans protected from the sun and using the jungle.
It's almost like people think the infamous flesh crayon wasn't named to stir up drama...

A (SORT OF) QUICK PSA:
In this video, I make the decision to forego gloves when handling these paints. Although I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS for safety reasons, I do have a couple of reasons why I chose to do this for this video!
1. When working with these paint tins, we noticed that the rust had nearly eaten completely through a couple of the tins, making them brittle and delicate. In order to be able to handle them with the utmost of care, I chose to take off my gloves.
2. For the most part, I was handling the external part of these paints- the tins, which, although quite rusty, don’t have a large risk of causing any harm to anyone, as long as you don’t cut yourself with them.
3. Because of the way these watercolors were made, the surfaces of the paint cakes themselves were extremely hard and not prone to flaking or crumbling- because of this, I felt relatively safe showing you just how much dirt was caked on them using my finger, because I knew that (unlike oil paints) there wouldn’t be a large transfer of paint onto my finger as I did. HOWEVER, again, I don’t recommend this, and I thoroughly cleansed my hands afterwards.
Ultimately, this video shows the fact that I was willing to sacrifice a bit of my safety for the sake of preserving the integrity of a priceless antique paint set. Is this ideal? No. Do I recommend it? Absolutely not. Do I regret doing so? Nah. This was one of the VERY rare instances where I knew the risks, I had done extensive research, and I felt relatively confident handling these paints.
Thank you guys SO MUCH for your comments and concern. I am doing just fine, no poisoning, etc, but I really wouldn’t advise doing things like this unless it seems absolutely necessary and you have done a frankly absurd amount of preparation and research first. 💜 Thanks for watching
