Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park isn’t just the tallest peak in Maine—it’s the ultimate destination for hikers looking to conquer one of the toughest trails in New England. But before you hit the Knife’s Edge, planning your parking is just as important as planning your route.

Baxter State Park’s three trailheads give you different ways to reach Katahdin’s summit:

-Roaring Brook: The most popular starting point, leading to the Helon Taylor Trail and eventually the Knife’s Edge. This is where we started!
-Chimney Pond: Accesses the Cathedral Trail, one of the steepest routes up the mountain, but provides direct access to Katahdin’s rugged terrain.
-Abol: Connects to the Abol Trail, a shorter, but steeper route to Baxter Peak, the highest point on the mountain.

Non-residents, take note: parking reservations are a must, and they sell out fast! If you're unable to snag a spot, you’ll need to arrive before sunrise and wait for no-shows. The earlier, the better—think 3 a.m. early!
