My childhood job history is much like yours. During 5th grade, I dried dishes instead of recess for 50 cents a day. I paid for my flute with the money, so that could be in the band. From that point on, I worked on our farm (no pay), as well as having a paying job away from home. As an adult, I worked 2 to 3 jobs so that my son could have a childhood and get two master degrees. My son got a job on campus when he was in college and maintained a 3.95 average. My focus has always been on his well-being, not mine.

I grew up on a farm. By the time we could walk & talk...
We were helping. As we grew older, me & my 5 siblings were in the fields or in our 1 of many sheds. The girls had to strip tobacco (Perique) a very strong tobacco. Its still used to blend in cigars.
The boys were out in the fields working ๐
I made 20 cents for every pound I stripped.
Its was a Family thing, we were all together every day.
Cousins also. There were no summer vacations, not when you're a farmer. I couldn't wait to be free of this work.
Now I know it was the Best days of my life.
If you haven't heard of Perique tobacco, look it up Dr ๐
You may find it interestin

I had a paper route, I used to ride my bike delivering them, then I would help my dad at his office, filing charts getting the charts ready for the next day and calling the patients to ask if they needed anything in follow up. Then in college I went to work for the facilities management department filing requests and dispatching the crew, I also work for dining service at the same time. When I went on Graduate school I tutored HS students. That said I have noticed a trend where I live for young HS kids starting their own businesses and they seems to really be having success because the are using todays technology to promote themselves and their work.

I was babysitting by age 13, but I earned an allowance by helping m Mother clean the house ( bathrooms and bedrooms mainly) before that. I was waiting on tables by age 16, & then worked at a drug store in town in my later years in high school (I walked to the drug store rain or shine.). I worked summers at Six Flags, off and on, in high school and early on into college. Later, in my Jr. and Sr. year of college, I worked at a bank part time in customer service. I eventually became a teacher and taught school for 34 years. I retired, and kept my grandchildren for a while, and then went back to work part time in a womenโs clothing store. I feel as if Iโve been working almost all of my life. (And I do charity/volunteer work from time to time.)

Babysitting even though very young and taking care of even small children and babies. You grew up leaning how to do things that were taught in the family. Then boxing groceries in a grocery store. I also got in my VW bug and drove to churches in rural areas to play piano for church revivals. Typing up papers for college students. It was a very different world then. Things werenโt perfect then, but better than now.

My first job was delivering newspapers that my mom and dad helped me with. Then I got a job as a "Feeder," feeding aged Jewish nursing home patients for $3.03 per hour in 1979 when I was 14. Now I earn more than POTUS as a physician, but I had a better year than him anyway so deserve it. But, my "parent's teaching" still help me along to this day.

My Dad had a typical corner store in Kenilworth, Cape Town, South Africa. We had to help in the shop so my Dad would hit the ceiling of the shop with the broom handle to let us know he needed our help immediately. He did not pay us but he did sent my twin and I to a private school. I did not mind as I could socialize with customers who were mostly neighbours. We lived in a double story Victorian House and the shop took up the half of the downstairs section of the house โคโคโค

Thought you would smile at this. As a newlywed I thought I would surprise my husband and wash and wax the car. All would be good until I tell you I did it in 90 degree heat full Sun. Bottom line couldnโt get the wax off but my sweet husband did with a chuckle lesson learned. When you mentioned washing and waxing cars it brought up this memory. Yes those were the learning days. ๐โค

My first job was at age 10, and I babysat for a neighbor. I also got a TV Guide route, which was once a week. The babysitting was my primary job until I hit the regular work force, but I had plenty of it. My dad was chief engineer at a shipyard, and word got around that โKenโs oldest was babysitting!โ So built-in referrals kept me busy. But I took my guitar with me and became known as the singing babysitter. ๐
