Self sustaining terrarium details ⬇️

I made this terrarium in October of 2020 and it’s been closed ever since!

THE WOODEN BALL fell in there when I was trying to find something to close the top 🤪 I couldn’t tip it to get it out because I already had the layers in there so there it stays!

The 4 year old plants have died off and decomposed without any smell (thanks soil microbes!) so now it’s time to add a new plant!

Ferns do so well on these terrariums and they just look so whimsical—I love them!

✨ I use pea gravel for my water reservoir layer but you can use any small stones you want.

✨ medium is equal parts potting soil, sand & sphagnum moss

✨ I have a roll of replacement window screen on hand always so I cut a piece to fit the diameter of the vase and lay it on top of the pea gravel before adding soil - this keeps it in place!

✨ add water to middle of gravel line

✨ condensation in the morning and evening on the glass is normal but if it is staying 24/7 you should open the terrarium and let it sit for a few days then close it and try again

✨ north windows are great, east is good as well. Otherwise keep away from harsh light such as in a south or west window.

What other questions do you have?

A self sustaining terrarium should not have plants dying off without reproducing more. That’s why it’s called self sustaining…

Very confident on the "self sustaining" part when it didn't self sustain the first time 😅

I think you need some charcoal and use real soil so you can have some little critters to keep the place clean

How about with some springtails as clean up crew?

can confirm- plants are NOT like cats and do land on their crown and break. lost too many herbs this year to windy storms.
gorgeous Terrarium though!!! love it.

You need bugs in it to keep it growing ❤😊❤ worms from outside etc just outside bugs 🐞 then the soil gets air n etc the circle of life 😊

I could tell from a glance there's way too much water and not a proper ecosystem to label this as "self sustaining"
I'd recommend introducing springtails or small snails into it

Would the plant still be comfortable if the glass was colored?

I put a maidenhair fern in a little glass terrarium a bit smaller that this one 2 years ago along with some moss and some adansonii nodes, now the fern is lifting up the cork and wants to come out lol

When I did one of these the wooden top became moldy is there something you’d recommend to fix that?

I don't know anything about terrarium so this is from genuine curiosity. I know you mentioned that your room got too hot and you waited for the dead plants to die and decompose before replanting. The other terrarium builds I've seen have been very careful about the amount of water they put in so i was a little surprised to see how you sprayed down the sides near yhe end. Did you let it air out at all or did it lose a lot of water previously because the room was too hot?

I've tried to make a terrarium once but everything molded so fast! It was disgusting! Now I'm too scared to try again.

Why is it so black? No enough light? I have mine on a bay window. Tall trees so it doesn't get pounded with sun all day. Vining plant, cissus discolor, I have in it is thriving. But so is the one I have outside getting portions of morning sun. Lots of green in mine like the moss is coming to life. But not sure if that's possible.
