As the story was told to me, a small detachment of German troops managed to cross the Meuse. The French officer on the spot requested permission to counter‑attack, confident he could drive them back. However, he was explicitly ordered not to engage by a senior officer who was said to be sympathetic to Fascism. That officer later died in a plane crash in 1943, so there was never an opportunity to question him about his reasons for refusing action at a moment when success was possible. Matters were made worse by the fact that the second line of French troops was of very poor quality — another element that seemed suspicious. I was left with the strong impression that parts of the French high command were, at best, ambivalent about their own cause.
