Eratosthenes and the Measurement of Earth's Circumference

Eratosthenes, a brilliant ancient Greek scholar, devised a remarkably accurate method to calculate the Earth's circumference in the 3rd century BCE. By observing the angle of shadows cast by the Sun at noon on the summer solstice in two distant locations – Syene (where the Sun was directly overhead) and Alexandria – he determined the angular difference between them. Assuming a spherical Earth and parallel sunrays, he reasoned that this angle corresponded to the fraction of the Earth's circle between the two cities. Knowing the approximate distance between Syene and Alexandria, he set up a proportion to calculate the Earth's total circumference. His result was surprisingly close to the actual value, showcasing his profound understanding of geometry and astronomical observation with the limited tools available at the time.

And thus for the first time in human history the size of a planet was measured (calculated, to be more precise). An amazing triumph of reason, mathematics, and rational thought.

He hired a man to pace out the distance from Alexandria to Syene. When the man was done with the distance, he texted Erathosthene that it was roughly 800km.

To get that result so accurately despite all the variables and possible things thag could throw off the numbers is crazy

But the rays of light don't angle to the center of the Earth You just said Light goes straight 😊

How did he know where the Center was? There should be not Ray's at all and only a Flood Lighting.

So if it's supposed to be floodlighting on a glohe didn't place intuitive fact that those sunrise means it's a local source close enough to see the rays?

πŸ€” How did he know the distance to the center? Which is about 4000miles downward
