In this video, I’m going to answer one of the most important questions in a grant application process: “How do I describe the beneficiaries of my project or program?” Accurately describing your beneficiaries can make or break your grant application because funders want to know exactly who is going to benefit from the work they’re supporting. Whether your beneficiaries are individuals, groups, or communities, being clear and specific is crucial.

First, we'll talk about demographics. It’s essential to clearly outline the key characteristics of your beneficiaries—age, gender, income level, geographic location, and any other relevant information. Funders need this to understand whether your project aligns with their priorities. Remember, being too broad can weaken your application. Instead, get detailed and show funders that you have a deep understanding of your target population. You might think that covering all bases with a broad description is beneficial, but specificity actually gives your project credibility.

Next, let’s discuss needs assessment. This is where you demonstrate that you’ve done your research and understand the challenges your beneficiaries face. You need to tell funders exactly why your target population needs the service, product, or program you're offering. Is it because of economic hardship? Lack of access to essential services? Chronic health conditions? Being clear about the specific problem your beneficiaries are experiencing will help convince funders that your project is necessary and worth supporting.

Finally, we’ll look at outcomes. How will your project change the lives of your beneficiaries? Funders want to see tangible, measurable outcomes that are directly tied to the beneficiaries. If you’re serving a community with high unemployment, what are the job opportunities your program will create? If your focus is on education, how will the students benefit? This is the section where you highlight the impact you expect to achieve and how your program will improve the lives of those you serve.

By the end of this video, you'll have three actionable tips for describing the beneficiaries in your grant application so that your project stands out to funders. Let’s get started!
