Flamethrowers were not a desired weapon for a few very good reasons:
1) The user had to be very close to the target for it to be used. And at such ranges, any submachine gunner could make easy work of them.
2) Their size and bright flames made a flamethrower a ripe target for enemy snipers and machine gunners.
3) Flamethrowers terrified everyone who faced them and as a result, it was extremely rare for flamethrower users to be taken prisoner.
