The M4 Sherman tank, one of the most iconic tanks of World War II, was known for its versatility and reliability, with a notable gyroscopic sight that stabilized the main gun and allowed accurate aiming while on the move. This feature gave the Sherman a tactical edge in mobile warfare, enabling crews to hit targets up to 1,200 yards away at speeds of 15 miles per hour, making it a crucial asset for Allied armored forces. ‪@AnyHistory‬

“You fool! It takes 4 of your Sherman’s to take down even one of our Panzers!”

“Well that’s great because we brought 29!”

"the M4 is arguably the most iconic tank of WW2"

The gyro kept the gun level during short stops. Doctrine was still to stop and fire.

The gyro was classified as secret, so most crews were not shown how to use it

The Tiger was iconic. The Sherman wasn't

Everyone saying that the Sherman was bad has no idea what they're saying. "Fury" is not a valid source.

Proper gyrostabilization like we have in modern tanks was not even remotely a thing yet. It might have helped a small bit, but you would still have a hard time hitting anything on the move. Even after ww2 we still had trouble making gyrostabilization, that's why the swedish have their funny cheese wedge tank.

not quite.
the M4's gyro stabilizer was not good enough to allow true on the move fire unless moving incredibly slowly, so doctrine was to still stop and shoot. on top of that, since most crews didn't know it was even there, it often wasn't even used.

The Tiger I is WWII's most iconic tank.

There is a difference between the total useful role served in WWII and iconic in WWII.

The M-4's gyrostabilizer did not allow shooting while on the move.

Anybody ever heard of the T-34? Shermans were a joke.
