I would love to know what year this was. I think Lin Dan’s footwork up until 2008 or 09 was not very good but he was extremely fast. His footwork improved a lot in 2013 and I think that by his late years, he was the best at it but the problem being that he wasn’t that fast anymore.

But Li Hyun Il has a very different play style. He is very conservative with his footwork by saving energy but his shots are ALSO very neutral. Not much change in pace either.

It does not mean that Lin Dan is worse than Lee, but that Lee's footwork is more effective and reasonable. For ordinary people who are learning badminton, Lee's footwork is the best model, and its requirements on physical ability are also low. Only when you have mastered the basics and have your own style, do you need to refer to and learn some of Lin Dan's characteristics.

Lin Dan might not have good footwork but he has the court knowledge and he can easily read his opponents' game. That's what makes him the GOAT.
