My suspicion is that some political factions were more violent than others, and the people's sentiments were the tipping point for making the choices between a violent period and a peaceful period. It's the process of ongoing social evolution, with change being the dominant force.

According to Pearson, Neolithic Britain was more violent than Beaker Britain. For a time, everyone in Neolithic Britain seemed to have some fracture or leaf arrow blade lodged in them.
