My daughter is 10 years old and she has tourettes. I had to pull her into homeschool because her IEP wasn’t being honored. A board member of the tourettes association of America literally sat in as an advocate for me during an IEP meeting at my daughters old school where they argued that because they didn’t see her tics she didn’t have them. When in reality she grew very good at surpressing them. This year she began writing on her own. In homeschool we did guitar and art and fun things to build up dexterity and Saturday she has her first guitar recital and people may scoff at how she sounds. But I’m going to cry because at the beginning of this school year that little girl could not write and has worked so hard to get here. 💗🦋 she has tourettes but tourettes does not have he

A friend of mine has tourettes and, whilst his tics are almost gone now due to less stress, if he has verbal tics when in public, someone with him will say something like "gotta love tourettes" cos people stop staring if they hear that. It sucks that it's needed to make him feel safe and to stop people being visibly bothered

I don’t have a Tourette’s diagnosis, but I have tics, and this made me cry ❤ one of my tics is rolling my eyes and aggressively shaking my head and I have to explain to people that I’m not trying to be rude, and that it’s involuntary. I’m also still in school, which can be stressful, and stress increases tics, which make it harder to do the schoolwork. It’s a vicious cycle. Thank you for spreading awareness about this ❤❤

So I saw a fight break out in my school and to be honest not saying I support fighting but in this case I would’ve done the same thing,
Theirs a kid in our school whose super super sweet, she has Tourette’s and one of her ticks was kind of a yipping/barking noise almost like a small dog. Well we were walking to grab some breakfast at school when she got this tick like super bad. We were both kinda light hearted laughing about it when these girls behind us broke out into laughter and my friend noticed this and her ticks just got like super out of control, she was saying like swears and hitting herself so I was trying to calm her down bc we were close to the cafeteria and one of the girls goes, “does the puppy want a treat?? Yip for a treat!” And bc my friend couldn’t control what she was saying she made the noise again, and the girls busted out laughing once more. Then this kid who was walking beside me and my friend literally turned around and full forced punched the girl who said that in the face, a huge fight broke out and we had to go to the principals office for questioning and stuff but yeah

I’ve had tics since elementary school, but I was taught suppression. It sucks because sometimes that can be just as painful as the tic itself!
